Juan Pablo Soler-Retinopathy of Prematurity(Chile)

Before treatment:     
The patient was born at 35 weeks gestation by cesarean. He had respiration problems when he was born, used CPAP for treatment and his left lung had problems. He was in a coma for 5 days then 18 days later his condition became better and he was transported to a general ward. The patient was vaccinated at the age of 3 months, one week later he showed hearing problems and he cried a lot, his eyeball became white and his eyes couldn’t chase light. He was diagnosed with ROP at a local hospital.
His spirit is normal, he sleeps 6-7 hours per day, his urination and defecation functions are normal.

Admission PE:
Bp: 92/60mmHg, Hr: 110/min, breathing rate: 22/min, body temperature: 36.8 degrees. Height 110cm, weight 19Kg. Nutrition status was good with normal physical development. There was no injury or bleeding spots of his skin and mucosa, no blausucht, no throat congestion, and his tonsils do not have swelling. Chest development was normal, the respiratory sounds in both lungs were clear and there were no dry or moist rales. The heart beat was powerful with regular cardiac rhythm and with no obvious murmur in the valves. The abdomen was flat and soft with no masses or tenderness. The liver and spleen were normal and there was no edema of the legs.

Nervous System Examination:
Patient was alert, concentration was poor, he rarely spoke, he could only say ma, dad, some family member names and some food names. He could speak short sentences, count numbers and he preferred to repeat what other people would say while he could not understand. He could not follow commands well. Patient could not cooperate with the memory,  comprehension and calculation ability examinations. Enophthalmus, he could not complete the eyesight examination, usually closed his eyes, sometimes he would open his eyes for a few seconds. In the short distance he can see big objects in front of him (he will not knock himself when he plays or walks alone), he would press his right eye frequently, the pupils color were white and showed an unclear response to light. He would not cooperate with the eyeballs movement examination and the doctors could not check the eyes fundus. The bilateral forehead wrinkle and nasolabial fold were symmetrical, he can take food normally, the hearing ability was normal, neck can move freely, the 4 limbs are flexible, he can not complete the 4 limbs muscle power examination, the 4 limbs muscle tone was normal and the tendon reflexes were normal. Abdominal reflex was normal, the sucking reflex , the bilateral palm-jaw reflex , the Hoffmann sign of both sides, Rossilimo sign of both sides  and the Babinski sign were all negative. He cannot complete the sensory and coordinate movement examinations and the meningeal irritation sign was negative.

Treatment:
After the admission he received 4 cell regeneration treatments (neural stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells) to repair his damaged retinal cells, replace dead cells, nourish cells, regulate his immune system and improve blood circulation. This was done with rehabilitation training.     

Post-treatment:
After 19 days treatment his eye-closing symptoms reduced, he would not press his right eye as much as before and the visual ability improved. He could now chase light, could grasp things directly and his sleep got better where he could now sleep for 7-8 hours at night. He was not as fretful as before.
